Isn’t it satisfying when you have a great solution literally at your fingertips? Like measuring tension on a timing belt with the flick of a finger. It really is that easy.

All you need is a smartphone and the ContiDrive Europe app, which can be downloaded now for free from the App Store and Play Store.

To measure the frequency, simply hold your smartphone’s microphone next to the belt (with the engine switched off) and flick the belt with your finger. The smartphone will then acoustically measure the frequency of the belt vibrations. The rule here is: the greater the tension, the higher the frequency. Armed with this knowledge, mechanics can then adjust the belt tension according to the specifications from the vehicle manufacturer. And here’s a quick tip: the level of accuracy rises the more measurements you take, so repeating the finger-flick trick a few times is worth your while.
