- Why are there two belts for the VW TDI, namely the CT 946 and the CT 1044, but with no recognizable difference?
According to VW, the CT 1044 is necessary from a certain engine number, depending on the engine code. VW has increased the change intervals as of that point. The CT 1044 can however also be used for all the older TDI engines. The OEM number is 038109119M.
- Why are there two belts for the older VW TDI/SDI, i.e. the CT 867 and the CT 945, but with no recognizable difference?
The CT 945 is required for applications subject to higher loads, such as all Sharan, Galaxy and Alhambra models. However, the CT 945 can always be used instead of the CT 867 (but not vice versa). The OEM number is 028109119AA.
- Why is the CT 919 K1/K3 called an "upgrade"?
The corresponding type of engine is factory fitted with a belt similar to CT 849 (152 teeth, OEM number 058109119D). According to VW/Audi documentation, the thermal damper has to be exchanged for a hydraulic damper when the timing belt is changed. This replacement requires a different timing belt called a CT 919 (153 teeth, OEM number 058109119C). This means that an upgrade kit is required, containing the changed belt, a pulley and damper.
- Are the engine number details and the limits to the range of chassis numbers binding?
We always carefully research these details using the manufacturer's specifications. However, we would advise you to carefully check the removed parts for any differences and, if necessary, to contact the ContiTech hotline at +49 511 938-5178 to discuss the matter.
- Where can I get the "lifetime belt" described in the press?
The "lifetime belt" described in some press reports is not intended for retrofitting vehicles already on the market. This is because the modified timing belt also requires modified engine control components (camshafts, oval sprocket technology, pulleys, bearings, etc.). As a result, no retrofitting is possible here. However, for some time now there have been vehicles on the market for which the manufacturer does not provide any change recommendations. Instead, a test mode is required that allows a trained mechanic to decide on the replacement.
- How long is the warranty on ContiTech belts?
For final consumers there is a warranty period of two years. In all other respects, the statutory regulations apply.
- Do the kit designations ? CT ...K1, ...K2, ...K3 ? refer to the corresponding number of pulleys contained in the kit?
No, the kits are numbered chronologically on the basis of when they were introduced. The K2 kit, for example, may contain just one pulley. Refer to the symbol on the packaging for information on what the kit contains and/or check the contents and user advice indicated in the catalog.
- Is it possible to use a normal multi V-belt instead of an elastic multi V-belt?
Elastic multi V-belts can easily be stretched during installation in order to establish the required belt tension, therefore it is not possible to install normal multi V-belts as an alternative.
- Why should I buy kits when the belt is also available on its own?
Performing a proper belt change usually involves more than a belt alone. Workshops play it safe if they also renew the tension, idler or guide pulleys at the same time as changing the belt. The kits from ContiTech give the workshop a complete package containing a full set of matching parts for performing the installation properly. This guarantees the best possible quality and safety for a technically proficient and effective timing belt change.
- Why are there several kits for the same belt (K1, K2, K3?)?
The kits contain different contents for different vehicle applications, for example because the vehicle manufacturer has made changes to the belt drive (e.g. automatic instead of manual tension pulleys introduced from a particular model year onwards).

Belt replacement
- Are the intervals between belt changes longer due to the new type of belt, e.g. CT 1028 instead of CT 1021?
Intervals specified by the vehicle manufacturer must always be complied with. If the vehicle manufacturer increases the interval between belt changes due to a new type of belt, and this change is also valid retrospectively for older vehicle models, the km increase can also be applied in the case of the corresponding CT belts (check OEM number!).
- Are change intervals available from ContiTech and are they binding?
As a rule the change intervals indicated are the manufacturer recommendations. As belts are used to a certain extent in different vehicles and exposed to varying load conditions, ContiTech cannot say anything definite for a specific belt type. In any case, the manufacturer recommendations concerning change intervals for a given vehicle also apply to ContiTech belts.
- Why should shaft sealing rings be replaced when the belt is replaced?
Leakage occurring at a later date can significantly impair the function of the belt and the automatic pulleys, even leading to total failure.
- Is it possible to check the tension and idler pulleys to determine their suitability for further use?
This can be roughly assessed by simply rotating the bearing by hand. As a rule the parts have been in use at least since the last belt change. Replacement is always advisable as subsequent replacement or a related failure always entails a considerable cost.
- Why is it necessary to regularly replace timing belts as per manufacturer recommendation?
Even if a timing belt appears to be in good condition, years of use under constantly changing temperatures can cause severe aging and considerable engine damage could result if the belt tears suddenly.
- How important are the tension setting and alignment of the timing belt?
The tension is a crucial factor in attaining the normal change interval. Insufficient tension overtaxes the teeth and can cause the belt to fail as a result of torn teeth. Excessively high tension is usually indicated by a typical sound while the belt is running and can usually be corrected in time before failure occurs due to overload. Incorrect alignment of the belt drive can cause the belt to chafe sideward against a flanged pulley or covering. This will lead to corresponding wear and eventually cause premature failure (belt rupture due to insufficient width).
- Do other components have to be checked and/or replaced in the case of a multi V-belt?
There is an increasing tendency to use technically elaborate components for accessory drives. These parts are also subject to wear. Here it is particularly important to check for any cracking on the decoupled torsional vibration damper ? if such exists ? and to also check the proper functioning of the alternator freewheel clutch ? likewise if such exists.

- Can the BTT Hz (belt tension tester) be used with all vehicles?
The BTT Hz is basically intended for tension pulleys that are adjusted manually. Multi V-belt drives can now also be measured. A data manual provided with the gauge gives clear information on the settings ? in the frequency unit Hz ? for all of the most common vehicles.
- Which vehicles can the TOOL BOX be used for?
An application list for specific vehicles can be found in the handbook and is also available here as a download from the Internet.
- Is the cross-reference book for the BTT Hz belt tension tester available separately?
No, the handbook is only available in conjunction with the belt tension tester.
- Are there conversion tables available from other, older measuring parameters (such as SEEM) to Hertz (Hz)?
No, force measurements cannot be converted into frequencies. We therefore recommend buying the BTT Hz so that a modern tension measuring method is assured using the parameter of frequency.
- Does the BTT Hz have to be calibrated?
The device is self-calibrating. This can be done by any user with reference to the instructions provided with the product.
